I watched a woman whisper to her biceps last Tuesday. Not like metaphorically. Actually whispered. Like she was breaking up with them. Or seducing them. Hard to say.
This was rep six. Dumbbells shaking. She paused mid-curl, stared lovingly at her reflection, and murmured:
“Yes, you beautiful monsters. I feel you. I see you.”
I dropped my resistance band in horror. Someone nearby coughed, but the kind of cough that says: this is not my business and I will not die today.
Thing is, I can’t even judge her. Because part of me… gets it. The mind-muscle connection—it’s real, sort of. Neural pathways. Electromyographic activation. The whole if you focus, it fires theory. I’ve read the studies. I’ve even pretended to understand the diagrams.
But here’s the thing: it’s not a magic spell.
Focusing on your biceps won’t turn you into She-Hulk overnight. Especially not while you’re cooing at them like they’re baby goats at a petting zoo.
I tried it once. Not the whispering—but the focus thing. Chest day. Pecs. I stared down my sternum like it owed me money. Nothing happened. I just got lightheaded and forgot where I was. Nearly fell off the bench. A man offered me orange juice.
Anyway.
Back to Bicep Whisperer. She finishes her set. Smiles at her reflection like she’s just closed a major real estate deal. Then walks off, hips swinging, and leaves her dumbbells exactly where they landed. Which is directly in my path.
And there’s the part I don’t respect.
You want to name your muscles? Fine. You want to take them on little spiritual journeys mid-rep? You do you. But put your weights away. That’s Gym Law. That’s non-negotiable.
Here’s my actual advice, in case you came here looking for it (weird choice, but thanks):
Don’t tune out. Don’t zone into some bro-podcast and train like a hamster in a trance. Be present. Feel the thing. Control the tempo. Squeeze the rep, not your delusions. And for the love of kettlebells—keep your inner monologue inner.
Unless you’re planning to narrate all your lifts in Shakespearean iambic pentameter, in which case… I might allow it. Once.
Just don’t name your triceps “Thunder” and “Justice.” That’s where I draw the line.
