Boulder + Beach: A 60 Minute Climb & Carry in Poblenou

By Denali

Poblenou is perfect for a no-nonsense strength day. Chalk and rubber indoors, salt and sand outside. We start with bouldering at the big gym near the old factory chimneys, then walk ten minutes to Nova Mar Bella for a simple sand finisher. No barbells. No drama. Grip, core, legs, lungs.

What you need

  • Climbing shoes, chalk, light layer for the walk
  • Small backpack you can load (two water bottles or a kettlebell if you have one)
  • Water, hat, sunscreen

Warm up in the gym (10 minutes)

  • 3 easy laps around the mats, arm swings, hip circles
  • 2×10 scapular pulls on the hang board or bar
  • 2×20 seconds wrist rocks on the floor, palm down then back of hand
  • 2×20 seconds deep squat sit, elbows push knees out, breathe slow

Bouldering technique block (30 minutes)

Pick easy problems only. Live in V0 to V2. We are training movement, not ego.

  • Circuit A: Choose 4 easy problems of different styles.
Do 2 relaxed laps on each, rest 60–90 seconds between goes.
  • Between laps: 5 controlled dead-hang seconds on an easy edge, open hand. Shake out.
  • Focus cues: quiet feet, hips close, look at the next foothold before you move.
  • Rules: no maxing out, stop if elbows feel tweaky, full rest if breathing turns messy.

Mini strength tri-set (10 minutes)

Set a timer and move cleanly, not fast.

  • Hollow hold 3×20–30s
  • Goblet squat 3×8 slow reps with a kettlebell or heavy backpack
  • Ring rows or low bar rows 3×6–10
Rest 30–45s between moves. Chalk up, breathe through the nose when you can.

Walk out through Poblenou’s side streets. Scooters buzz, someone hoses a doorstep, the sea shows up between buildings. Shake the forearms. Keep shoulders down and back.

Beach finisher (10–15 minutes)

Find a flat strip near the waterline.

  • 3 rounds
    • Farmer’s carry 40–60 m with two loaded bottles or your backpack in one hand, switch at halfway
    • Walking lunges 20 steps in the sand
    • Nose-breathing walk 60–90 seconds, let the heart rate slide down
Keep your ribcage stacked over hips. Sand will try to tip you; that’s the point.

Cool down (5 minutes)

  • Calf stretch off a curb or step 2×30s each side
  • Forearm flexor and extensor stretches 2×20–30s each
  • Two slow breaths in through the nose, out longer than in

Why this works

Climbing gives you pulling strength, grip, and scapular control most gym days miss. Sand carries hit stabilisers, hips, and heart without pounding your joints. The walk between them resets your head and keeps the session under an hour even with Barcelona traffic doing its thing.

How to progress next time

  • Same circuit, but choose one problem a touch harder and keep it tidy
  • Add 10 m to the carries, or one extra round
  • Swap goblet squats for split squats if knees are happy

Denali’s don’ts

  • Don’t chase grades on a cross-training day
  • Don’t crimp hard when you’re not warm
  • Don’t stack beach work at midday in July. Go early or late. Shade and water are training tools here

I finish with a dip if the flags say it’s safe, then a quick coffee on Rambla del Poblenou while the chalk leaves my hands. Simple, strong session. Barcelona does the rest.
