Let’s talk about the least glamorous part of fitness.
Not squats.
Not protein.
Not some weird Pilates machine that looks like medieval furniture.
Sleep.
I know. Boring. Not exactly the stuff of Instagram reels.
But honestly? If your workouts feel harder than they should, your motivation is evaporating, and your body is acting like it’s permanently stuck in “low battery mode”…
It’s probably not because you need a new training plan.
It’s because you’re sleeping like a raccoon.
Fitness Isn’t Just What You Do in the Gym
Here’s the thing nobody wants to hear:
You don’t actually get stronger during your workout.
You get stronger later.
When you’re eating. Resting. Recovering. Sleeping.
The workout is just the part where you politely tell your muscles,
“Hi, yes, I’d like you to adapt, thanks.”
Sleep is when your body goes,
“Alright, let’s handle this.”
No sleep = no adaptation.
Just vibes and soreness.
Barcelona Is Not Exactly a Sleep-Friendly City
I love Barcelona. Obviously.
It’s sunshine, beach walks, Montjuïc hikes, movement everywhere.
But it’s also…
Late dinners.
Street noise.
That one neighbor who thinks 1am is a normal time to rearrange furniture.
Summer heat that makes your pillow feel like soup.
It’s very easy here to live like you’re on holiday while your nervous system is quietly begging for a nap.
“But I Get Enough Hours”
Cool. Love that for you.
But sleeping isn’t just about being unconscious for 7 hours while scrolling TikTok until your eyes give up.
Quality matters.
Good sleep feels like:
- You wake up and don’t immediately hate everything
- Your legs don’t feel like wet cement
- Your brain isn’t buffering all day
That’s the goal.
Not just “I was technically in bed.”
Signs Your Sleep Is Messing With Your Fitness
If any of these sound familiar…
- Every workout feels harder than it used to
- You’re sore for three days after doing something normal
- You’re craving sugar like a cartoon character
- You’re tired but also weirdly wired
- Your motivation has left the group chat
…it might not be your program.
It might be your bedtime.
Denali’s Very Unsexy Sleep Tips (That Actually Work)
No detox tea. No supplements. No “biohacking.”
Just real life.
1. Morning sunlight is free and wildly underrated
Get outside early.
Even 10 minutes.
Your brain needs daylight to know what time it is, otherwise your sleep schedule becomes pure chaos.
2. Stop treating your phone like a bedtime companion
Your phone is not a cozy sleep aid.
It’s a tiny stress machine full of bright light and opinions.
Try leaving it across the room.
Yes, you’ll survive.
3. Don’t train like a maniac at 9pm
If you finish a workout late and then wonder why you can’t fall asleep…
That’s because your body thinks you’re being chased.
Evening sessions are fine, just don’t make them a full nervous system emergency.
4. Eat dinner a little earlier if you can
Barcelona loves a late meal. I get it.
But if you’re eating a full feast at 10:30pm and trying to sleep at midnight, your digestion is basically hosting a nightclub.
5. Make your room feel like a cave
Cooler. Darker. Quieter.
Not aesthetic. Effective.
A Real Client Moment
I had a client once who was convinced she was “getting unfit.”
Workouts felt awful. Energy was gone.
We didn’t change her training.
We changed two things:
- No phone in bed
- Earlier dinner
Two weeks later she said:
“Oh my god, I feel like my legs work again.”
That’s sleep.
Not magic.
Just biology doing its job.
If You Take One Thing From This
Before you punish yourself with more cardio or start googling “why am I always tired even though I work out”…
Ask:
Am I actually recovering?
Or am I just collecting workouts like stress souvenirs?
Fitness should feel good.
Not like a never-ending boot camp run by a drill sergeant who hates joy.
Sometimes the most productive thing you can do for your body…
Is go to bed.
Seriously.
